In Igbo culture, garden eggs are served with

ose oji, a spiced peanut butter dip, as a symbol of hospitality, unity, and respect. This culinary pairing is a traditional gesture offered to guests at important social and ceremonial events.

The elements of the dish
Ose Oji (Spiced Peanut Butter)
  • What it is: A savory and often spicy dip made from roasted peanuts blended with local spices.
  • Key ingredients: Besides peanuts, traditional recipes for ose oji can include ehuru (African calabash nutmeg), ground chili pepper, and vegetable stock. Some recipes may also include crayfish and a little oil to help achieve a smooth consistency.
  • Preparation: Peanuts are typically roasted and then ground or blended with the other spices to form a thick, creamy paste.
  • Variations: Although the classic accompaniment is garden egg, the versatile dip can also be served with kola nut, boiled yam, or bread.
Garden Egg (African Eggplant)
  • What it is: A type of African eggplant with a slightly bitter, crunchy texture. The white variety is often served raw.
  • Preparation: The garden eggs are typically served fresh and whole, or sliced, providing a fresh, crisp counterpoint to the rich, creamy ose oji.
  • Alternative dishes: While the raw garden egg and ose oji pairing is traditional, garden eggs are also a key ingredient in cooked sauces and stews that are eaten with boiled yam or plantain.
The cultural significance
In Igboland, the offering of garden eggs and ose oji to a guest is a profound act of courtesy and respect. This combination is a staple at major gatherings, including:
  • Weddings
  • Funerals
  • Traditional title-taking ceremonies
  • Family meetings and casual visits
In addition to its culinary role, the sharing of ose ojiand kola nut is a sacred practice used to pray and make libations at ceremonies. In this context, ose ojimay also refer to alligator pepper, a spice with ceremonial significance that is sometimes chewed along with kola nut.
